The mission of the John E. Fetzer Memorial Trust is to ensure the integrity of the founder's spiritual legacy, by seeking to advance integrated, relational views of reality through exploring scientific frontiers and universal spiritual practices.
A key role of the John E. Fetzer Memorial Trust encompasses researching and documenting our founder's life, vision and mission for the John E. Fetzer Institute.
We also seek to ensure that John E. Fetzer's lifelong interest in cutting-edge, frontier science, in addition to his interest in spiritual development, remains at the core of the philanthropic organizations he endowed. John E. Fetzer emphasized that science was essential to advancing our understanding of the integrated and relational nature of reality and the human being, including body, mind, and spirit. He often quoted Albert Einstein who said "The most beautiful and profound emotion we can experience is the mystical. It is the source of all true art and science." In concert with the John E. Fetzer Institute, the John E. Fetzer Memorial Trust endows and operates the Fetzer Franklin Fund to advance his integrative scientific vision in the 21st century.
Together with the John E. Fetzer Institute, the John E. Fetzer Memorial Trust conducts programs that connect the inner life of mind and spirit with the outer life of service in the world.
While John E. Fetzer recognized that science was a major driving force propelling forward human civilization, he also held the deep conviction that without genuine spiritual values any solutions to humanity's problems were unsustainable in the long term.
He said, "I have known many people whose success was primarily due to their showing loving concern for others. They exhibited the qualities of love without ever defining it. They would be reticent to do so. I have no such reservation. Love is the core energy that rules everything. It's the force field... of creation. Love is the one ingredient that holds ALL together. 'God is love' is the summary."
